Tips for Keeping Your Child Engaged in Science When at Home

As a parent, you want your child to be as engaged with their education as possible. One of the areas that may be a struggle for your child to stay engaged with is science. Whether they are home because of the pandemic, for the summer, or for other reasons, you may be looking for ways to get them more engaged in science at home. Here are a few tips that you can use to help keep your child engaged in science when they are at home.

Make Your Kitchen a Science Lab

Science and cooking go together extremely well. As such, you can get your child more engaged with science by making your kitchen into a lab. Try baking together, for example. Try different recipes and alter the amount of flour in the recipe. Or you can try cookies with melted butter versus softened butter to see the difference in the cookie consistency.

These are science experiments disguised as cooking lessons. Your child will learn to use the scientific method as they experiment with altering one ingredient at a time and by testing to see the different results. You do not even have to tell them they are doing science. They will be engaged with it anyway. And, as an added bonus, you guys will have delicious treats to share afterward.

Get Home Science Kits

Another way to get your child engaged with and interested in science at home is to get them home science kits. These kits come with all of the supplies and equipment you need to perform science experiments or tasks.

Slime kits, for example, allow your child to see what happens when they combine certain ingredients. They will create a slime that they can play with and further experiment with.

There are also home science kit subscription boxes that you can try. These involve monthly science kits that are sent to your house for your child to work with. These kits include fun games that can help your child learn science. They will be working with chemistry, physics, biology, and more without even realizing they are learning scientific facts and principles.

Now that you know a few of the ways you can keep your child engaged in science when they are at home, you can be sure to try these tips out and help your child learn to love science. You can also lead by example and share your excitement as you experiment with them.
